Tha Basilica of Esztergom is the largest Hungarian church and it was founded by King St. Stephen.

The Basilica of Esztergom is the most significant, therefore the largest among the churches in Hungary. The church was founded by King St. Stephen during the first years of our statehood. One time when St. Stephen was staying in Esztergom it was consecrated in honour of St. Adalbert and the church was called „beautiful church'. The building was completely destroyed during the Turkish invasion. Only one of its side-chapels escaped the destruction. The Basilica of Esztergom is one of the earliest and most beautiful renaissance buildings outside Italy. The dimensions are the following: length 117 meters , width 47 meters (97 meters at the towers). The total height of the basilica is 100 meters, the inner height is 68 meters. The visitors can enjoy a wonderful panorama from the dome to the city and the Pilis Mountains.

Esztergom-Budapest Archdiocese

Potential usability

As visitor you can visit all parts of the Basilica: the church, the Cathedral Treasury, the Crypt and the dome as well. Additionally messes are held in the Basilica. Because of the religious rules it is not easy to accomplish development. The most important is the conservation of the Basilica and the development of related buildings (for example the cellar system).
