Crete (Greece)

Crete is the largest and most popular Greek island and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

It forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece, while retaining its own local cultural traits (such as its own dialect, poetry and music), consisting of the prefectures of Chanea, Heraklion, Rethimno, Lasithi, with a total population of 601.263, area 3.8335 km2.
The geographical spot of the Region of Crete has always been an important gate in the international system of sea transport and trade. Crete has a significant diversity of ecosystems and an archaeological and folkloric wealth.
Two main sectors of economic activity exist in the Region of Crete: agriculture/stock-breeding and tourism. The region of Crete has an adequate number of institutional structures that support entrepreneurship, a significant number of structures for education, research and vocational training and a telecommunications infrastructure at a satisfactory level.
On the other hand, Crete faces the absence of an extensive and powerful manufacturing sector in terms of medium-sized companies, a seasonal employment in the agricultural and tourist sector, the danger of severe environmental downgrade as a result of the ruleless growth of economic activity, and the problem of insularity.
